What a wonderful way to start the week with the Year 3 and 4 choir performing at the Rose Theatre on Monday. The children behaved and sang beautifully and were a real credit to our school. I was so impressed by the soloists with their radio mikes. Reception have thoroughly enjoyed reading ‘Zog and the Flying Doctors’ and creating their own magical creatures. Year 1 have been busy learning about a new penguin breed and making comparisons between the Emperor and Gentoo penguins and Year 2 have been making drums to celebrate Chinese New Year. Year 3 have enjoyed getting muddy making Stone Age houses (all your donations of cardboard have been worth it!) and Year 4 have been writing stories on the life of a gladiator. Year 5 have started writing their newspaper reports about the Thai Football Team rescue and Year 6 have been looking at how people inherit traits from previous generations. Finally, the first children have received their badges today for completing the reading challenge. Please see the attached newsletter for more details of what has been happening this month.
We also held a very interesting talk for parents this afternoon on the Zones of Regulation. We are finding this approach so helpful in school in supporting both children and adults with handing their emotions. Thank you to all those who came along. We know that some people expressed disappointment that they were not able to attend and so we have included a link to the presentation for the talk. We will also look to see whether we could offer an evening talk as well.
Professor Robert Winston Visit – Monday 2nd March
We are very privileged to be welcoming Professor Robert Winston to our school on Monday 2nd March to give a talk at the Juniors (to Years 2-6). Robert Winston is a medical doctor, Professor at Imperial College and a member of the House of Lords, best known for his work on human fertility. He is also a popular broadcaster and communicator, having done much to further the popular understanding of science and presented a number of radio and television documentaries, including the acclaimed BBC series Walking with Cavemen, Your Life in Their Hands, Making Babies, Superhuman, The Secret Life of Twins, Child of Our Time, Human Instinct, The Human Mind, Frontiers of Medicine and the BAFTA award-winner The Human Body.
Professor Winston has over 300 scientific publications and has kindly agreed to do a book signing at the end of his talk for any children who would like to bring to school any copies they have of his various ‘IndoorLab’, ‘OutdoorLab’ and ‘Ask a Scientist’ books.
Parent Representatives meeting: Friday 7th February at 2pm, Infant staffroom
We will be holding our next Parent Representative meeting on Friday 7th February and we will be continuing our discussions about revisions to our reports to parents in order to make them both helpful for parents and manageable for staff.
Do also pass on your comments to your reps. We would value both celebratory comments about things you have appreciated recently, so we can continue them and also queries about possible areas for development or clarification.
Your orchestra needs you!
Calling all instrumentalists (not piano or guitar): if you have been playing a string, wind or brass instrument for two terms plus, and you can read some music, please join us. Every Wednesday, 3:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. Please contact the Junior Office to sign up.
Rhythm of the Word Concert – Monday, 8th June 2020 at 7:00 p.m. at Royal Festival Hall, London
We have been informed that tickets for this concert on 8th June, in which the Year 5/6 Choir are performing, will be released for sale from the Royal Festival Hall next Friday 7th February.
Gardening Volunteers – Sunday 9th February
A few of our parents have kindly volunteered to do some gardening at the Infant site from 10:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. on Sunday 9th February. If anyone can spare some time to help, they would be very happy to see you! If you can come, please bring gardening gloves and a fork.
Reporting Pupil Absence
Please can we remind parents of the importance of informing the school as soon as possible if a child is absent. To report a child’s absence please contact the school via the ParentMail App, telephone or email to the office. You must contact the school either each day of absence or advise the school on the first day of absence how long your child will be absent. It is vital that we are kept updated as we are keen to ensure that any child who walks to school on their own is safe.
I am sorry to be writing to you again about inconsiderate parking. We have received yet another complaint from one of our neighbours on Lime Grove that they were blocked in by parents, for a third time within a week, when they needed to get out to collect their children from school, the most recent being a Red VW – registration number AL11 HLS. This is completely unacceptable and, given the number of complaints we have received in recent weeks, very embarrassing. Please could people not park in the wrong place even for a moment.
The thunk this week is ‘If elephants ruled the world, what changes would you see?’
