November 12th 2021

Dear Parents/Carers,

We are delighted to be able to share that we have successfully achieved the first stage of the ‘Rights Respecting Schools’ Award’. Unicef has judged that we are now at Bronze: Rights Committed. Today, the children’s steering group met for the second time. They have planned activities for next week’s anti-bullying week, linking with 3 articles (2, 12 and 19). Do ask your child to tell you more at the end of next week!

Reminder: Remembrance Parade and Service – this Sunday, 14th November 8.45am

Malden and Coombe Royal British Legion are arranging a full Parade and Remembrance service on 14th November 2021. This is Malden and Coombe’s 100 year anniversary as one of the founder members of the British Legion and therefore a very special day for them. Our school will be attending and two Year 6 children will be laying a wreath at the service. If your child would like to join us in the parade, please come wearing school uniform and meet at 8.45 a.m. at Presburg Road ready to march off at 9.00 a.m. to arrive at the Memorial at 9.20 a.m. for the start of the service at 9.30 a.m.

Checking Your Information

We usually send home a paper copy of the information you have given us about you and your child (contact details, dietary needs, medical details, consents) so you can let us know if there have been any changes.

We hold your information on a system called SIMS.  In order to speed up the process and save a few trees, we have decided to use SIMS Parent Lite which will allow you to update the information online.

You will receive a separate email asking you to register as a user of SIMS Online Services and then for SIMS Parent Lite. SIMS Parent Lite can then be accessed via a web browser or by downloading the SIMS Parent app for free from the Apple Store or the Google Play Store.

Open the Book – help needed

Open the Book, the wonderful volunteer group who bring the bible to life at Wednesday assemblies, are looking for people to join them. If you are interested in helping out then please leave your details with the school office.

Anti-Bullying Week

Next week is Anti-Bullying Week and this year’s theme is One Kind Word. In assembly and in class, children will reflect upon how we can use our words and actions to be kind and show respect. They will also be reminded of what bullying is, how it makes people feel and what we can do if we see or experience it. Obviously, if parents are ever concerned that a child is being bullied, they should contact the class teacher straight away. Do remind your children, as well, that there is a worry box in each Infant class and the Junior Chromebooks have ‘worry buttons’ so children can share any concerns discreetly with their teachers.

CATS Tests

Children in Years 2 to 6 recently took the Cognitive Abilities Test Fourth Edition (CAT4), which assesses how well a child can think about tasks and solve problems using a range of different questions. Some tasks involved thinking about shapes and patterns (Non-verbal Reasoning), some with words (Verbal Reasoning) or numbers (Quantitative Reasoning) and, finally, some questions were answered by thinking about shape and space together and imagining a shape being changed and moving (Spatial Ability).  In the next fortnight, parents will receive a report on their child’s results. If you have any questions, please speak to your child’s teacher.

Keeping Everyone Safe

For your information, please see the attached latest information about covid symptoms in children and vaccinated adults. Please could you be very alert to possible symptoms and not send your child into school if you are in doubt.
