Today, we had our first meeting of the parent reps. It is an important conduit for information, questions and concerns and we are grateful to all the parents who give up their time to take on the role. This afternoon we held a Returners’ Tea, for the children in Year 7 who left Christ Church last summer. It was lovely to see so many Year 7s come, and to hear how well they have settled in to secondary school. It was the first time we have done this but, after the success of this afternoon’s tea, it looks certain to become a tradition!
For those of you following the campaign for better school funding, please see the attached letter from Kingston headteachers.
We had reps from every class at the meeting and had a wide ranging discussion. There were three main issues that had been raised by parents, two of which, unfortunately, we have little control over!
Parents are concerned about road safety on Lime Grove and Elm Road, as are we. Vehicles drive down both roads at great speed and are frequently parked badly. We know that the previous and current councillors are concerned about this and we are happy to organise a meeting with them.
Parents are concerned about the size of portions at school dinners. The portion sizes follow Government guidelines, which are partly aimed at tackling obesity, but children may eat larger portions at home. We are part of a borough wide contract and don’t have very limited input into its; operation.
There was positive feedback about our new system of home learning, though some parents ask if we could send home work on paper. We moved to the online system of home learning, because it engages the children, gives more information to parents and allows work to be better targeted. The feedback from children has been very positive.
We also discussed plans for the infant playground, to re-landscape the grass area and replace the trim trail.
Parents Evening – Nursery – Year 5
This term we have the following opportunities for parents of Nursery to Year 5 pupils to meet with their child’s teacher:
•Wednesday 14th November (4 p.m. – 7 p.m.)
•Thursday 15th November (3 p.m. – 6 p.m.)
Booking for Parents’ Evening will be through ParentMail, and will be available from 7.00 a.m. on Monday 15th October. You will need to log in to your ParentMail account to do this.
If you are booking appointments for more than one child, you need to allow at least the following gaps to give you time to get to the next appointment:
•Multiple appointments on one site – 10 minute gap after the end of your previous appointment (e.g., Infant child 1 – 6.00 p.m. and Infant child 2 – 6.20 p.m.)
•Multiple appointments on two sites – 20 minute gap after the end of your previous appointment (e.g., Infant child – 6.00 p.m. and Junior child – 6.30 p.m.)
We are really pleased that you can access a facility which enables you to add notes to your booking for the teacher, so you can let them know of any areas that you particularly want to focus on during the appointment. Book your appointment first, and then you will be able to add your notes. This will help the teacher with any additional preparation.
Appointments are for 10 minutes. If you need more than 10 minutes, you should make a separate appointment directly with the child’s teacher.
You can only book one appointment per child. If there are reasons why individual parents require separate appointments, please contact the Office on email@example.com.
Please note that school will be closing early on Thursday 15th November (2.15 p.m. Infants and 2.30 p.m. Juniors). This is in recognition of the considerable time and effort that teachers put into both the preparation for and the actual meetings with parents. We are hoping that this little alteration will keep teachers fresher for both the meetings and their teaching the next day. We are also following the pattern of neighbouring schools. Connect will offer an extra hour of child care on this day for those who have already booked.
Year 6 Learning Reviews
For the past few years, we have invited Year 6 parents to a longer Learning Review instead of the usual parents evening meeting. The review, which will also involve the child, allows parents to meet their child’s literacy and maths teachers. The review will be 15 minutes in total, split between the class, maths and English teachers. It acts as an invaluable transition for children as the approach used by secondary schools. In order to accommodate this, we will not be holding these reviews on days of the Parents’ Evenings.
The reviews will take place on Friday 16th November between 8.00 a.m. and 4.30 p.m.
The form will be available to complete from 7.30 a.m. on Monday 15th October. Please indicate which of the timeslots will be most convenient to you. We will then allocate appointments and split the time between both teachers. You will receive confirmation of your appointment times.
Year 6 Secondary School Applications
Just to remind you that the deadline for secondary school applications is quite close. Please remember to complete your on-line application by 31st October. If you are having any problems with your application, please contact the Junior Office.
The Infant Artificial Grass & Nursery Area
Please note that the infant artificial grass and nursery area should only be used by children when they are supervised by school staff or coaches from clubs. Tempting as it may be, we would ask you not to let your children use it before or after school. Otherwise there is a danger of both injuries and the breakage of equipment, and we would not be insured for either in such circumstances.
Sickness – Vomiting and/or Diarrhoea
Please remember that children should not come to school for 48 hour after the last incident of diarrhoea or vomiting. If a child tells us that they have had diarrhoea or vomited in the past 48 hours, we will ask parents to collect them to reduce the spread of illness to other children.
Photograph Day – Friday 9th November – Sibling Photos
Pret-a-Portrait will be at the Junior site on Friday 9th November to take individual photographs of all the children. Infant classes will be walked up to the Junior site during the morning for their photographs.
As we did last year, and to reduce the disruption to lessons, sibling group photographs will be optional. These will be available before school (7.45 a.m. – 8.45 a.m.) or after school (3.30 p.m. – 4.30 p.m.) on the same day.
If you would like to book a sibling group photograph, please complete the form on ParentMail indicating a first and second choice. Each family will then be given a five minute appointment time. We will do our best to give you one of your choices. Please note that this is only for children who attend Christ Church New Malden Primary, not younger or older siblings not attending this school.
Parents/Carers are responsible for bringing their children to the Junior site for their time slot. Please note there will be no supervision for your children before/after your time slot. For before school slots you will need to take your children home/supervise them until start of school or you are welcome to book them in to Connect. For after school slots you will need to collect your children at end of school and take them home/supervise them until your slot.
The form will be available for booking from 4.00 p.m. on Monday 15th October.
